When adding a facility drug to the system, the Item blank can be filled out in multiple ways. The cloud portal is linked to the FDA’s database that includes any drug that is part of this database. The item being added can be searched by NDC number of by name.

Searching by NDC number

If the NDC number of the drug being entered is known, this is the preferred method for searching. Note that only the first two segments of the NDC number need to be entered in order to find the desired drug. Once the desired NDC number is found, select that option and it will populate the blank with it.

Searching by Name

When searching for a drug by name, it should be noted that the only drug names that will appear will be drugs that have been previously entered into the system across any of the currently existing systems. This means that the drug name may not appear when searching by name if it has not been entered into a different facility yet. If the desired drug does not appear, try searching the drug by NDC number instead as this will search through the entire FDA database. Additionally, when searching a drug by name, make sure that the correct strength and route are selected.

Custom Items

Some facilities may need to add drugs that are not part of the FDA database. To do this, enter Custom Item into the Item blank and use the Nickname blank to name the item entered.
